What Is 6150 Steel
AISI 6150 steel is an alloy spring steel. It has great mechanical properties and processing properties. And it also can be called ISO 51CrV4 steel and 1.8159 steel. It has high hardenability, fatigue strength and yield strength. By the way, add the vanadium to steel to make crystalloid get smaller, decrease the overheating sensitivity, raise the strength and toughness of steel. But its weldability is not good. If you feel interested in it, you can check 6150 steel properties, chemical composition and heat treatment as below.
51CrV4 Steel Applications
- Due to its special properties, it was used in the field of the aircraft industry, automobile, boats, ships, metallurgy, chemical industry and etc. As the material of ships, it usually is used in the low-temperature condition. So it must have great general mechanical performance at the room temperature condition. The plasticity and impact toughness of steel is related closely to the microstructure. If the strength raises, the plasticity and impact toughness of steel will decreas.
- 51CrV4 steel is a higher level of spring steel. It is good material for spring with high load and big size cross-section and the valve spring.
- It can also be used for the overall quenching of steel for plastic molds and die-casting molds.
6150 Steel Heat Treatment
Annealing
The annealing processing can make it go get great machinability. Austenitizing at 1400ºF (760ºC) followed by an iso anneal at 1250ºF (680ºC.)
Normalizing
The standard temperature for normalizing is 1650ºF (900ºC.), then use the way of air cooling.
Hardening
Austenitize 6150 steel at 1550-1625ºF (845-885). And use the oil quenching way for the small one, but the large one is to use the water quenching.
Tempering
From 1000-1250ºF(540-680ºC) as per required properties.
